Case Study: Data collection and Asset Tracking

HotButton Solutions Inc. has developed a fully paperless Asset Tracking and general purpose Data Collection system. Using industrial handheld computers for field staff to enter data on field operations directly eliminates virtually all paper forms that are normally required for such activities as inspections, maintenance, oil and gas production data capture and the movement of equipment from place to place.
A key part of this concept is CodeBase, running on each hand held computer. The handheld computers have one additional special feature. They are equipped with iButton readers which can read iButton chips from Dallas Semiconductor, which permit the user to fix locations, Data Collection Points and Assets during data entry on the handheld. This is valuable for applications requiring audit trail because the user cannot fake the reading of an iButton, as he could with bar codes. He has to have been at the point to make the reading.
HotButton Solutions has also developed a proprietary two way synchronization conduit for uploading and downloading data from the handheld databases to an Oracle Server. The usual method of synchronizing to desktop files is eliminated. Corporate data is of little use sitting on a desktop computer. Instead, the data is synchronized directly across an Internet link to the central Oracle Server, making all data collected directly accesible to all users via the Internet.
"We have found CodeBase to be an extremely reliable database and with the smallest footprint of any database we tried for the handheld computers. As many industrial handheld computers are ODS based, our handheld programs must fit within 640K of RAM, including application and CodeBase itself. We are pleased with both the stability and performance of CodeBase in this application."
