When trying to open a file, file permission errors can sometimes be due to a feature of Microsoft NT Server called "Opportunistic Locking". Several web sites also say that "Opportunistic Locking" can cause data corruption.

Here are some revelant links.

There also seems to be issues with Opportunistic Locking on Novell servers. However, this should not normally be a problem with Novell systems because the current versions of Netware Client 32 come with Opportunistic Locking disabled by default. See Novell's Technical Information Document on this topic.
